Before you book
St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace stand side by side: book both for the same morning, before the day-trippers arrive. Venice is a city of walking and water buses, and a travel pass pays off if you take the boat more than a few times.
How many days do you need in Venice?
Two days for San Marco, the Grand Canal and the quieter districts, three with the islands of Murano and Burano.
Do I need tickets for St Mark’s Basilica?
Yes. Entry is by timed ticket, and the visit is short, so it fits into a morning with the Doge’s Palace.
Is a gondola ride worth it?
It is the dearest way to see the canals. The water bus along the Grand Canal passes most of the same palaces for the price of a ticket.
